College Credit Application

Hopefully you (parents) were able to attend Parent - Teacher Conferences held on November 21, 26, and 27th.  Information was being handed out to 10th and 11th grade parents that evening on how to apply to be a part of our Concurrent College program (earning college credits while in high school).  If you did not receive that information, it will be included in your student's report card mailing.  Otherwise you may read the letter and print the application by clicking here.  It is very important that this application is turned in by December 16th or your student risks the chance of not being able to be a part of this program.  I need to turn in the applications to M State Fergus Falls before Christmas break.

Please call if you have any questions.

This Week in the Guidance Office...

If you are a 10th grader, this is a reminder that we are giving the PLAN test during hours 1-3 in the auditorium on Tuesday.  This is a one time given test, so please plan to be present for this test.

If you are an 8th grader, we will be giving you the EXPLORE on Thursday in the auditorium during hours 1-3.  Again, this is a one time test, so please plan to be present for this test.

All 8th and 10th graders need to remember to bring a calculator, two #2 pencils and something to work on if you finish with the test early.

Parents: Information about these tests was sent home with each of your students, please let me know if you have further questions.

Enjoy your week!

Scholarships and College Application Fee Waivers

I have added some scholarships over to the right, take a look and hopefully something will be there for you to apply for!  As a reminder, the local scholarships will be available for seniors starting in mid-February.

As a reminder, most colleges in MN are offering fee waivers during the month of October.  This means if you wanted to apply to a few colleges without having to PAY the application fee, this is your opportunity!  SEIZE THE MOMENT!  =)  You can read my former post about that, here.

As always, any questions - stop and see me, call me or email me.

Senior Financial Aid Night

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! Monday, January 20th at 7:00 p.m. there will be a financial aid night held for parents and students at the Gorecki Center on the campus of the College of St Benedict. (This is NOT a College of St Benedict sponsored event - the meeting is just being held there).  You will receive an invitation for this event postmarked from the College of St Benedict, so please watch for your invitation in the mail sometime towards the end of December.

This meeting is very helpful for all students and parents.  They will talk about any changes to financial aid, how to apply, who to go to for extra help, and a question and answer time.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions about the meeting.

Senior Events Coming Up!

October is a great month to push yourself, if you haven't already, to apply to college.  Here you can find a list of colleges in the state of MN that are participating in "College Knowledge Month" (formerly known as College Application Week).  Essentially this means that all of the attached named colleges are waiving their application fee so you can apply for FREE during a certain time this month.  Check it out!  It could save you a few bucks.

Tomorrow, October 8th, I will be holding 4 informational meetings for seniors to learn more about college applications, financial aid, scholarships and to answer any questions you may have.  Please plan to attend.  They will be held in room 306, Mr. Dusha's room at 7:50 a.m., 1st lunch, 3rd lunch and 2:50 p.m.

Also, for the senior parents that read this - please contact me if you would like to meet to talk about anything in relation to your senior (graduation, financial aid, scholarships, etc.)

Spring Update

Soon I will be welcoming a new baby into my family!  Because of this, this will be my last week at Melrose HS until next fall.  As I wrap up things in the guidance office, just a few reminders:

- Mr Wing, former counselor from BBE schools, will be filling in for me and available to answer your questions.  Feel free to contact him.
- Seniors will be receiving a lot of information from their colleges and from us (Melrose HS) in the next month.  One very important piece of information: If you are going to college in the fall then your college will want a final HS transcript.  All FINAL high school transcripts need to be requested from Audrey Hiltner.  You can start requesting these now.  Typically they are mailed out the middle part of June.
- If your senior took college courses while in HS, transcript request forms will be available in the guidance office and from teachers by mid May.  Remember, if you are going to college you need to submit a request for a final college transcript from the college.
- 2013-2014 student schedules will be passed out the week before Memorial Day.  If your student would like to make changes, they will need to fill out a schedule change form and make their changes before they leave for summer break.  These forms will be available in the guidance office.

I am happy to say I think we will soon be able to enjoy some warmer temps, so HAPPY SPRING!

It's Working (for now)...

The registration system appears to be up and working....for now!  Please make sure, if you are a 10th or 11th grader, that you log in through ParentVue or StudentVue by tomorrow morning to create your class schedule.

Problems with Registration

I have been notified that there is a problem with the registration web site, StudentVue and ParentVue, where the 10th and 11th grade students are unable to change their course requests.  We believe this is a problem with the software program located up in Moorhead.  I have placed an urgent request for this to be fixed and I appreciate your patience.  I will update this blog once the problem is resolved.  I apologize for any inconvenience!

2013-2014 Class Schedules

Tomorrow, Thursday, April 11, all 11th and 10th graders will be receiving their class schedule packet.  Basically this packet tells them every course offering for hours 1-7 semester 1 and 2.  They need to create a schedule in their StudentVue account over the weekend (Friday-Monday).  Any 11th or 10th grader who does not complete this process will be called alphabetically to the computer lab on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday to complete their class schedule requests.

How is this different from what they already did in January?  In January when they entered requests, they were entering in what classes they would like to see offered.  Based off of the January information from students a master schedule with all classes is then created.  This is what they will see tomorrow.

As a reminder: a student does not always get all of the elective classes they want.  They are asked to enter 4 alternative courses for this reason.  Most of the time 11th graders (next year's seniors) will get what they ask for.  As a rule of thumb, electives are given to seniors first, juniors next, then sophomores, and finally freshmen.  Also, there are times that even though a student has their schedule figured out the way they want it, I may have to re-arrange the schedule to even out the sections of courses better (so that there are not 32 in one hour and 10 in another hour).  I still keep what they ask for (assuming there is room) but make adjustments as deemed necessary.

8th and 9th graders (next year's 9th and 10th graders) will not need to go through this process as their schedules are a bit more "cut and dry" and are based off of what they requested in January.  They have the option of 2 electives each semester whereas my juniors and seniors have 5 or more electives each semester.

Please take the time to look over your student's schedule and encourage them to go through the class schedule request packet this weekend.  Thanks!

It's coming to a close...

I know you would never think it looking outside or at the weather forecast, but graduation is just around the corner!  Last week, with some help from Mr Ruoff's TA's, I got the senior's plans up in the senior hallway.  Make sure to come by and take a look at all of the colleges, military and other plans they have in place starting this coming fall.  It's a sure sign of graduation!

Scholarships still being added!

Just a reminder, scholarships continue to roll in (how fortunate for our seniors!).  Today I just added the Greenwald Lions and the Royale B. and Eleanor M. Arvig Memorial Scholarship (worth $3500!).  Make sure you continue to check out the local scholarships listed on the right side of this blog.

Senior Meetings

The last few days I have been meeting with all of the seniors either one on one or in groups of 2 or 3.  This is an opportunity to discuss financial aid, scholarships, registration at their college, finding out where they are headed after graduation and lastly an opportunity to ask any questions they may have.  Today I will be completing these meetings.  I invite the parents to contact me if they still have not filled out the FAFSA (free application for financial aid) as it is ideal to have this completed by early March.  If you are a parent to a senior, please take some time to discuss this brief meeting with them and ask to see the materials I shared with them as well.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS HAVE ARRIVED!!!

Seniors - make sure to check out "LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS" on the right side of this blog.  This is where you will find all of the scholarships that are offered to just the Melrose HS Seniors.  Underneath that you will also find the column "Scholarships" which are scholarships that are offered to our students and to other school's seniors as well.  All local scholarships are due by March 28, 2013 to Audrey.  Good luck!!!

ACCUPLACER Testing Starts Tomorrow!

Tomorrow all sophomores that are scheduled to test and some juniors will test to see if they qualify for college level courses.  On Wednesday is the make up day for those absent tomorrow and Thursday is a day for re-testing (if eligible).  Remember to study and try to be in your designated location at your assigned time!  =)

College Class Testing

Numerous juniors and sophomores will take the ACCUPLACER the week of February 4th.  The ACCUPLACER test is provided by M State Fergus Falls as a way to determine if you are eligible to take college level courses.  Please click here to study for the test.  You are also welcome to Google "ACCUPLACER Practice Test" and use any other links you may find.  I also list other links on the right side of this blog under "Useful Web sites".  If you don't study the test could be difficult for you.  You will receive a note with your test date and time one week before the test.  The test is un-timed and does NOT allow for calculator use.

What's Happening here in Guidance?

I just want to keep you updated of what the next month looks like here in the Guidance Office.

- Students who are wanting to change their schedule for semester 2 should be making arrangements to do that as the end of semester 1 is Jan. 24th.  Students can print/view their schedules on their StudentVue accounts otherwise they will need to sign up by next Thursday to get a copy of their schedule on the guidance window.
- Starting next week (week of Jan. 14) I will be meeting with each class (8-11th grade) to instruct and review logging into their StudentVue accounts and give instructions on requesting classes for the 2013-2014 school year.  This is only to request the classes they would like to see offered, it's not creating their schedules.  The 10th and 11th grade students will receive a copy of all the 2013-2014 classes being offered for 2013-2014 in April and will create their schedules then. 8th and 9th graders won't create their own schedules as they only have a choice of 2 electives in comparison to many more in their upperclassmen years.
- This week, if a 10th or 11th grader had an eligible cumulative (not current) GPA, they received an application that needs to be filled out and returned to me by tomorrow to test to take college level courses in the 2013-2014 school year.  All 10th graders with an eligible CUM GPA (3.2) received the application and all 11th graders that either weren't eligible to test last year, or didn't pass one or more tests last year, were given the application (2.8 GPA).  It is very important that this application is returned to me by tomorrow as the applications need to be sent to Fergus Falls for review in order to test (remember all rules in regards to the college courses are set up by M State Fergus Falls college, not Melrose HS).
- All 2013-2014 class requests are to be completed on students' own time (either on a computer at home, at the library at school or a computer elsewhere).  If the student has any problems or questions, they are asked to set up an appt to see me. 9th and 11th graders will receive their packets on January 22 and 10th graders will receive their packets on January 24.
- College testing will take place the week of February 4, 2013.  You can find study materials (which is necessary) on the right side of this blog under ACCUPLACER practice tests.
- On Jan. 14 I will review with the 8th graders, their EXPLORE test results.  On Jan. 24th I will review with the 10th graders, their PLAN test results.

If you have any questions, please let me know.  Thanks!

REMINDER SENIORS: Financial Aid Meeting

By now you should have received a letter from the College of St Benedict inviting you to their campus to learn about the financial aid process (again, as a reminder, this is an event hosted by the MN Office of Higher Education for all colleges state and nationwide, not the College of St Benedict).

Here is a recap of the blog post I had on here back in September.

The following is an email I received from the director of financial aid at the College of St. Benedict:

Hello, high school counselors-

I write to invite your students to this year’s financial aid night at the College of Saint Benedict.

My goal is to inform your seniors and their parents about the financial aid application process and the types of financial aid that may be available to them.   As you will recall, this is a general financial aid presentation – not a Saint Ben’s/Saint John’s program.  The event is scheduled for 7:00 PM on Monday, January 14, 2013 and will take place on the CSB campus in Gorecki Center.

If you are interested in having seniors and their parents from your high school invited, please send labels with the students’ home address to Kari Schroeder, CSB financial aid office coordinator, at the following address:  College of Saint Benedict, Financial Aid Office, 37 South College Avenue, St. Joseph, MN  56374.

Thank you, and let me know if you have any questions.

Stuart Perry

Executive Director of Financial Aid
College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University

So....make sure you mark this date on your calendar and are keeping your eyes open for a letter from the College of St. Benedict in your mail sometime in December.  To reserve your spot, call (320) 363-5388.

Also, there are various scholarships listed on the right side of this web site under "Scholarships" - make sure you are checking this web site periodically for updated scholarships.  The local scholarships will be available on here starting in mid-February.
