Melrose Senior is a National Merit Scholarship Qualifier!

Melrose student Hannah Miller, a senior at Melrose Area High School, recently was named a semifinalist in the 61st Annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Hannah is among 16,000 semifinalists to advance and have an opportunity to earn the 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million.  About 1.5 million high school juniors entered the competition, and the scholarships are awarded in the spring.

Hannah is extremely motivated and dedicated to her academics as well as extra-curricular activities. A few of the activities that she participates in at Melrose are Student Council, National Honor Society, Knowledge Bowl, Speech and Varsity Swimming.  Of these activities, she is the captain in swimming, Knowledge Bowl and Speech.  Of special significance, Hannah was voted and participated in the American Legion Girl’s State Program as well as the MN House of Representatives High School Page Program.  In addition to all of her involvements Hannah has been recognized and/or volunteered with various activities such reading time at our local library in the summer, working with children during the community wide Riverfest and Barley Days summer celebrations, packing food for Kids Against Hunger, church choir and American Red Cross Blood Drives.  These are just a few of the many things that Hannah has participated and been recognized in our school and community. She has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school and had a near perfect ACT score during the state wide ACT test examination in April 2015.  Hannah’s high level of academic, leadership, and athletic achievements are a direct result of her work ethic, inquisitiveness, and positive rapport with her peers and teachers.

Students enter the 2016 National merit Scholarship program by taking the Preliminary National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an initial screen of program entrants.

Semifinalists must next submit a detailed scholarship application that includes academics records, school participation and community activities, leadership abilities, employment and honors received.

Announcements of National Merit Scholarship recipients begin in April and conclude in July.  Scholarship recipients will join more than 315,000 other distinguished students who have earned the National Merit Scholar title.

National Merit Scholar designees are selected based on their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.

For more information about the competition, visit the National Merit Scholar Competition website at www.nationalmerit.org.

Seniors: Requesting College Transcripts

Seniors, if you want a transcript sent from M State Fergus Falls or Fond du Lac College, you need to request these as they are the property of the college and are sent to the college you are planning to attend from the college.  M State handles all of your college courses with the exception of Spanish/German and College Economics - those are from Fond du Lac College.

Who does NOT need to request to send their college transcripts? Only those students are attending a MN public colleges.  Here is a list of MN public colleges.  The colleges on this list have access to your college transcripts already.

Make sure that you request that these are sent AFTER final grades are submitted (when this semester is over).

Here is the Fond du Lac College transcript request.  You will need to print it off, fill it out and mail it in yourself.

Here is the link to the M State Fergus Falls transcript request.  This one is free and is submitted online.  Directions: once on the page, scroll to the bottom of the Graduation and Transfer section and click on the Transcript Request link.  You must have Java up to date and installed on your computer for this to work.  If it doesn't work at home, the computers in the guidance area will work.

Questions?  Let me know!
