Juniors: ACT Sign Up

The school sponsored ACT test for any interested juniors will be on Tuesday, February 28th, 2017.  There is no makeup date.  This is free to any juniors that sign up.  Additional test dates and information can be found at www.actstudent.org, but you must sign up and pay for those dates separately from the school test.

Sign up is on Ms. Dusha's door and will be open until Friday, December 2.  We won't take any sign ups after this date.

A letter is being sent home with every junior in their World History class this week.  Please look for this or ask your junior about it.

Financial Aid Presentation

Seniors: remember to RSVP to mdusha@isd740.org if you're planning to attend the Financial Aid Presentation on Wednesday, Nov. 2 in the ITV room at 6:30p. The presenter is Valerie Knopp from the SCSU financial aid office.  She offers a wealth of knowledge to all students regardless of what college you plan to attend.  I hope you and your parent(s) can attend!

Diversity Conference

If you would like to attend the Diversity Conference for students (grades 9-12), sign up on the guidance window and pick up a permission form from the guidance table.  The conference will be held at St Cloud State University from 10-1 on Friday, December 2.  You will have an opportunity to hear from various colleges, employment news, and various other information that is helpful for your future.  Sign up by November 18.

PSAT Test

Juniors: If you signed up to take the PSAT test on October 19th, please stop in the guidance office and pick up the PSAT Student Guide booklet on the guidance office table.  The test will begin 1st hour in the auditorium and will go through 4th hour.  Plan to bring two #2 pencils and a calculator.  If you have questions, see me.

First Day!

Welcome back!  Here are a few things to keep in mind as we start another year:

- Senior meeting (parents are invited) is at 9:15 a.m. in the Marit Elliott Performing Arts Center (Auditorium) next Tuesday, September 6th at 9:15am.  We will talk about applying to college, graduation procedures, how to stay informed, financial aid, etc.
-All schedule changes are due no later than Friday at 3pm
- Logging into your StudentVue: you no longer use the username you set up.  Instead the username is your school email and the password you created.
- Please make sure you know how to log into your school email.  I send a lot of communication to you, students, at your school email.

Awards Night

One of the most exciting events of the year for seniors occurred last night, Awards Night.  It is so fun to be able to honor all of the top earning student's hard work.  Great job to those deserving students!

Seniors: as a gentle reminder, if you were awarded a scholarship, please take the time to write a thank you note to the people/business that awarded you the scholarship.  Without their generous donations, these scholarships won't continue.  We want to show we appreciate their generosity.  If you are unsure who or where to send a thank you note, please see Audrey or I.

Preparing for Graduation

Starting next week I will be seeing all seniors to talk about graduation, requesting transcripts, honors diplomas, financial aid, scholarships, and any other questions they may have.  This will provide you with all the information you need to complete your senior year.  One of the main "issues" after graduation is that a senior did not request their HS and/or college transcripts.  This meeting will provide you with all of the information you need to be able to do this very important task.

Career and College Fair

This Wednesday is the College and Career Fair at Melrose Area HS.  It will be in the HS cafeteria from 1:30-3:00.  During 6th hour all 11th graders will attend and during 7th hour all 10th and 12th graders will attend.  Here is a list of the colleges and career reps that will be present.

Become an EMT!

Here is an email I received from a Melrose ambulance employee last week.  Contact Randy (phone number in the email below) if this is something that interests you.

This is Randy Dufner and I’m an EMT that works on the side for the Melrose Ambulance for 20+ years.  Our city owned department covers the communities of Melrose, Freeport, Albany, New Munich, Grey Eagle, Meier Grove and Greenwald.  With Albany losing their Hospital which was very unfortunate also opens up doors for more Ambulance members with the additional responses / transfers we have been receiving.  We are also getting to be an aging bunch whereby some of us are looking for our replacements  J.

At this time, we are currently seeking community residents in our Ambulance area and High School students (preferable seniors what want to go into a medical related field) to enroll in an EMT class that will be taught in Melrose at the station typically two nights a week for three months (about).  The City of Melrose will pay the tuition as long as the student commits to working for the ambulance department no less than three shifts per months for 1-full year.  The student, once passing the class and the national test, will be paid for both standby time and run time while working for the ambulance.  Clothing (shirts / sweaters) with ambulance logo will be furnished by the city as well.  We have an apartment at the station where out-of-towners can reside while on call can stay complete with bed, kitchen, television, internet, and a workout room.

Personally, I started working for the ambulance while I was in school to cover a lot of my college tuition…. 24 years later, I’m still at it J

So I guess what I’m asking is, do you know of any students that you feel would be a great fit for the department and a great opportunity for the student to launch their medical related career at no cost to them?

I am willing to meet with a group of students or 1 at a time if they have any additional questions concerning this opportunity.

Please let me know in the next few weeks, we are wanting to get a class going by this coming March 2016.

Seniors: Another Financial Aid Meeting Opportunity

Seniors: If you were unable to attend the Financial Aid Night at Melrose HS last week, there is another opportunity for you to attend a similar meeting being held on the College of St. Benedict.  This is not a St. Ben's meeting, this is just where the meeting is being held.  It is for all students, regardless of where they are planning to attend college.  Here is the information I received:

Just a reminder to ask any seniors planning to attend Monday night’s financial aid program at Saint Ben’s to contact our office to register.  The phone number is (320) 363-5388.  Walk-ins will certainly be welcome, but it helps to have an estimate of the number of attendees.

The event starts at 7:00 and takes place on the CSB campus in the Gorecki Center.

PSAT 10 Opportunity

If you are a 10th grader and interested in taking a free test during school time on February 17th that will help prepare you for college, help in your career planning process, learn about scholarship opportunities and how to improve your test scores, check out this website to learn more about the PSAT 10.  In addition, here is a link that will help you to study for this test if you decide you want to take it at our school.

There was a letter sent home regarding this test.  You must contact me via email, phone - or just stop in to see me, no later than January 13th to sign up.  There are only 50 spots available.
