College Knowledge Month

October is "College Knowledge Month" in the state of MN.  It is an initiative encouraging students to apply to colleges.  Many colleges waive the application fee for the whole month and some waive it just the last full week of October. I will be offering numerous times during the last full week of October for students to come into the guidance office and apply to those colleges on this list. Of course you are welcome to come other times for help as well!  Take advantage of this great opportunity!

AGAIN! Please make sure that you (student) and one parent have created an FSA ID (video instruction is above) before the FAFSA completion night at least 3 days beforehand.

If you are unable to make the event here at Melrose HS - there is another opportunity for the completion event and here is the information below:

The Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s financial aid office will be hosting a FAFSA-completion event on Monday, October 22 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM in the Saint John’s University Alcuin Library.  We thought it appropriate to be sure that families were aware that their child is not required to apply to CSB/SJU in order to utilize this service.

We ask that families RSVP using the link in the included email below, which you may edit as you wish and then forward on to your senior parents.  Because our space will be limited, families will be asked to sign up for one of three times-slots:  5:00 – 6:00, 6:00 – 7:00, and 7:00 – 8:00 PM.

Dear Parents of Seniors,

Regardless of where your son/daughter plans to apply for school, The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University financial aid office is hosting a FAFSA-completion event on Monday, October 22 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM in the Saint John’s University Alcuin Library.  This is an opportunity for you to complete the FAFSA with your child for the 2019-20 academic year, in addition to being able to ask questions of a member of the financial aid staff.   Please RSVP using the link below as you will sign up for a one-hour time slot.

Senior Meetings

I am just finishing up the first week of the small group senior meetings.  I am hopeful the seniors are finding the information helpful as they start the process of college applications, which can often be very overwhelming.  With that said I wanted to mention a few keys dates:
- October: the last week in October is free application week - watch for information/dates on coming into the computer lab and applying to state schools for free and to get help with this
- November 15: Financial Aid workshop at school - 6pm.  This is for parents and/or students.  A letter will be mailed home about this.

Here is an advertisement I received from Alexandria Tech/CC about applying for free as well:
