Dear Parent(s) or Guardian:

It is with sadness that I inform you of the death of Craig Wiechmann, a senior in our school. Craig died from injuries suffered in a farm accident that occurred Saturday afternoon.

The funeral will be held at St. Rosa of Lima Church in St. Rosa on Wednesday 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held at St. Rosa of Lima Church in St. Rosa during the hours of 4-9:00 p.m. on Tuesday and 1 hour prior to the funeral. The school will provide bussing for students that would like to attend the funeral. Students not taking the bus, but wanting to attend the funeral are encouraged to attend with their parents.

Students will have varied reactions to the death of a peer. Any reaction is normal in the grief process and can range from withdrawal, to crying and anger. I encourage you to openly discuss with your child their reactions and feelings regarding the death of Craig. Special counseling services have been made available to students today and will continue to be available throughout the week and longer, if needed.

If you think your child needs additional counseling support, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Dusha or Ms. Nietfeld, counselor and social worker at 320-256-4224.

Tomorrow is the Career and College Fair!

If you are a 10th-12th grader or parent, I hope you are planning to attend the Career and College Fair being held in the HS Cafeteria tomorrow, Wednesday. During 6th hour it is open to only juniors, 7th hour is open to 10th-12th graders and from 2:50-4:00 it is open to 10th-12th graders and their parents. Currently over 20 colleges, Melrose businesses, and military branches will be in attendance. I hope you will be able to make it!

Some important information:

- 2 weeks ago we completed the course requests for the 2012-2013 school year. Sometime around the end of April the master schedule for the 2012-2013 school year will be available and I will be meeting with students to complete their schedules for next year at that time.

- The college and career fair, open to all 10-12th graders, is next Wednesday, Feb. 8th. Be sure to attend - it is open to parents, as well, from 3-4 pm.

- If you are a sophomore or junior and would like to take college credit courses for the 2012-2013 school year, your request to test form must be turned in to me by the end of the school day tomorrow (Wednesday).

Congratulations to the Melrose/Sauk Centre Boys' Swimming and Diving Team who qualified for the State True Team Swimming and Diving meet on Saturday. Medal winners from Melrose include John Schwieters, Brent Blommel, Aaron Stalboerger, Jared Von Wahlde, Phil Budde, and Matthew Beste. The team will compete at the State Meet this Saturday at the U of M.

Congratulations Dance Team for a great 2nd place finish in both high kick and jazz at your home meet last night!! Make sure to come watch them this Saturday as they compete at NL-S at noon.

The 2012 Community Talent Show is Sunday, March 18. We are looking for performers! If you sing, dance, act, play an instrument, juggle, do stand-up comedy or have other talents to share, please talk to Stacey in the Community Education office about participating in the show! Thank you!

Stearns County American Dairy Assn. (ADA) is looking for potential dairy princess candidates. If you are a daughter/sister of a dairy farmer or work for a dairy farmer and are between the ages of a senior in high school and under 24, you are asked to share your knowledge of the dairy industry and promote your family’s business and way of life to the public by participating in this year’s Dairy Princess Program. Pick up applications in the office. Forms are due back to me (Audrey) by Wednesday, February 8.

The next session of classroom drivers education is February 21 – March 5 from 3:15 – 6:15. If you are interested in this session sign up with Audrey – cost is $285.00 – they ask that you pay the whole amount or $50.00 down when you sign up and the rest by the first day of class. Make checks payable to Central Lakes Driving School.

Four lifeguards are needed during 6th hour on January 27. Please see Stacey in the Comm Ed office if you are able to lifeguard. St. Mary's students will be coming to swim.

Renaissance cards are ready for you to pick up. Also pick up a sheet explaining where you can get discounts and businesses who donated money for the program. If you enter these businesses please thank them for contributing to the Renaissance program. Your Renaissance cards are good from December 5 – February 17. Just a reminder that next week on Monday, Jan. 23rd there will be a financial aid meeting held for all seniors and their parents put on by the Mn Office of Higher Education on the campus of the College of St Benedict. All seniors should have received a letter from St Ben's about this useful night. You must register ahead of time by calling 320-363-5060. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. Remember, this event represents all students attending all types of colleges, not the College of St Benedict.

Here's another little "tidbit" of information to help you learn about different ways to pay for college. This is directly from the the publication "Paying for College" from MOHE.

American Indian Students
American Indian students in Minnesota may be eligible for additional financial aid from the state of Minnesota, the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs and their tribe.
Minnesota Indian Scholarship Program Scholarships are available to eligible American Indian students who are either undergraduate students enrolled at least 3/4 time or graduate students enrolled at least half time. Eligibility and awards are based on need.

Eligibility Requirements: In order to qualify for this scholarship, you must be:
• one-fourth or more American Indian
• a Minnesota resident for state financial aid purposes
• enrolled in an accredited college, university or vocational school in Minnesota
• undergraduates must qualify for a Pell or State Grant, graduate students must demonstrate need
Application Process: Students should complete the FAFSA and complete an application at www.getreadyforcollege.org/indianscholarship. The priority deadline is July 1. Information and application forms also are available from:

The American Indian Tuition Waiver at the University of Minnesota, Morris, recognizes the campus’ origins as the Morris Indian Boarding School founded in the 1800s. American Indian students admitted to the University of Minnesota, Morris, may apply for this waiver by submitting the American Indian tuition waiver application and supplying acceptable documentation.
Eligibility Requirements: To qualify for this benefit, students must be accepted by the university’s admissions office, complete the American Indian Tuition Waiver
application and provide American Indian heritage documentation, which may include the following:
• tribal registration proving membership in a federally- recognized American Indian tribe

Dress up days for Holli Daze week

Friday: Pink and Purple day. We ask for everyone to wear purple and pink in support of Maggie Lieser. Pink and purple are Maggie’s favorite colors. Pink and purple day will take place of Dutchmen Friday of this week.

Jingle Ball for grades 9-12 will be held on December 16^th. The dance is semi-formal and the ticket cost is $7.00.

Alee photography will be at the dance Friday to take photos. Please pick up your order packet from Cheryl. Additional packets will be available at the dance. $1 from each package sold will be donated to Maggie's Fund.

If you would like to bring a date to the dance Friday from another school please stop and get the form from Audrey. Also the dance is semi-formal so dress up!!

The Jingle Jar winners will be viewing their movie this Friday, December 16th during 6-7th hour. The class winners were Mr. DeCann, Mr. Dusha, Mr. Haan, and Ms. Vedbraaten. You may go to the auditorium after your 5th hour class. We need to start the movie as soon as possible to be able to finish it.

If you have a test during your 6-7th hour, you need to stay back and take the test, unless you set up a different plan with your teacher.

Maggie

As most of us are aware Maggie Lieser, one of our senior students, was critically injured in a car accident on November 12th. Since then the students of this school have done an amazing job coming together to support Maggie and her family with fund raisers of selling (and hand making!) hundreds (if not a thousand) bracelets and creating and selling t-shirts with Maggie's beautiful face on them. All of the proceeds will go to Maggie's family. Our kids are amazing. They have supported each other and Maggie in overwhelmingly emotional ways as well.

Next week on Wednesday between 3rd and 4th hours all students who are wearing Maggie's shirt should come to the HS Gym to have their picture taken. Wear your shirt and show your support!

Federal Grants for Aspiring Teachers

Beginning fall 2008, the federal government offers the TEACH Grant program, which provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in an elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families. In exchange for receiving a TEACH Grant, students must agree to serve as a fulltime teacher in a public or private school serving low income students for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which they received a TEACH Grant.

Eligibility Requirements: To receive a TEACH Grant, students must meet the following criteria:

complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (although financial need does not need to be demonstrated)
be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
be enrolled as an undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or graduate student at a participating institution
be enrolled in coursework necessary to begin a career in teaching and meet certain academic achievement requirements (generally maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25)
sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve

IMPORTANT: Students who fail to complete the four-year service obligation will have the total amount of their TEACH Grants converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. Students must then repay this loan to the U.S. Department of Education and will be charged interest from the dates of the grant disbursement. Application Process: Students apply to their college financial aid office. Each year that students receive a TEACH Grant, they must sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve available from the U.S. Department of Education at www.studentaid.ed.gov.

Attention students! On Thursday Dec. 1st we are looking for volunteers to help tie 150 fleece blankets for our troops. We will be starting immediately after school in the high school cafeteria please come and help as this is a big project. Jingle Jar will run this week Thursday (12/1) during 1st hour. Student council members will be collecting the money from each MS/HS classroom before 9am these mornings. We will do our best to keep interruptions to a minimal. The top 3 classes in MS and the top 4 class in HS will get a daily prize given to the class the following morning. There will be a grand prize given to the overall top 3 classes in MS and the top 4 classes in HS.

We want to thank all of you for your flexibility and support during these few days. We understand that this does interrupt class time, but we also know that there are students that walk our halls each day that will benefit from our schools generosity.

Only one more day left to participate in this year's "Giving Tree" project sponsored by the Melrose chapter of National Honor Society. If you haven't participated yet, please take an ornament with specific gift ideas off the tree during your lunch and furnish those gifts before Friday, December 2 to the NHS. The tree will be displayed during the three lunch periods in the cafeteria and the gifts will be distributed to needy families in our community. National College Application Week (and a free application fee opportunity)!

This week (Nov 14-18) is National College Application Week (NCAW). This is the information that was provided to me by the Collegeboard regarding NCAW. States are being encouraged to support and promote “National College Application Week,” planned for Nov.14–18, 2011. This national campaign is modeled after North Carolina’s College Application Week, which aims to provide every graduating high school senior with the opportunity to apply to college online. A focus is placed on first-generation students and students who may not otherwise apply to college. (For application fee waivers, all 110 North Carolina colleges and universities accept the College Board fee waiver for students with financial need as determined by the school counselor.) Some institutions waive application fees for all students during National College Application Week.

With that said, I received the following email from the admission counselor at St Cloud Technical and Community College with an opportunity for students to apply THIS WEEK for free!!

Health Professions Loan Programs

Health professions continue year after year to be a popular area of study for students. Here is some information on a loan program specifically for students interested in this area. The following was taken from the MN Office of Higher Ed's publication "Paying for College".

Various federal scholarship and loan programs are available for students interested in health professions, such as nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry or medicine. Campus-based programs include the Health Professions Student Loan Program, the Primary Care Loan Program, Loans for Disadvantaged Students Program and Nursing Student Loan Program.
Additional health loan repayment programs may be available from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Application Process: Students should contact the financial aid office at the school where they are enrolled or intend to apply for admission. Visit www.bhpr.hrsa.gov to learn more. Contact flrpinfo@hrsa.gov with questions.

I just returned from the MN Office of Higher Education's annual financial aid meeting. It's always good to hear what is new in the world of financial aid and hope that you all will keep Monday, January 23rd free to attend the meeting sponsored by the MN Office of Higher Ed for parents and students at the College of St Benedict. There will be a mailing sent to you if you are a senior/senior parent during the month of Decemeber. The letter will be coming from the College of St Benedict, so please don't just throw it out thinking it won't apply to you! It's being held at St Ben's but is NOT affiliated with St Ben's - it's a meeting for ALL senior students who plan to attend some type of college after high school.

Between now and the meeting I will have a once a week post on different types of financial aid to help familiarize you or help you recognize some new types of aid that you may not have thought about before.

Congratulations to the Girls' Swimming and Diving Team who won the Section 6A True Team Championship on Saturday. They edged out the top ranked team in the state, Sartell. They will compete at State at the U of M Aquatic Center on Thursday. Congratulations to Sydney Rasmussen who set a school record in the 100 Breastroke at the meet. Are you interested in attending the Model College of Hair Design? If you are, see me. Model College sent two scholarships that can be used by any of the Melrose Area High School seniors.

On Tuesday myself, Ms Pottratz, and 42 juniors and seniors went to the college fair hosted by the MN College Admissions Counselors at Halenbeck Hall at St Cloud State University. The students seemed to enjoy the time visiting with the representatives and I was again so proud to have such polite and well rounded students representing Melrose HS!

On Thursday, October 27th during 1st-4th hours I will be giving the PLAN test to all of the 10th grade students. The PLAN program helps 10th graders build a solid foundation for future academic and career success and provides information needed to address school districts' high-priority issues. It is a comprehensive guidance resource that helps students measure their current academic development, explore career/training options, and make plans for the remaining years of high school and post-graduation years. PLAN can help all students—those who are college-bound as well as those who are likely to enter the workforce directly after high school. The test is given only once and since it is not required, there will not be a make up day for the test.

Lastly, there are numerous college admission representatives that will be coming to Melrose HS to talk about their college. This is an opportunity for students to talk with the rep, find out more about the colleges, ask any questions they may have, and start gathering information to help in making a college decision. I am hoping to get enough seniors and juniors to sign up to attend the college fair being held at Halenbeck Hall on Tuesday, Oct 11th from 9:30-11:30 a.m. SCSU will provide the transportation and I will chaperone if we can get enough students to sign up. Wow, time flies when you are having fun! Before you know it school will be starting! I hope you have enjoyed the summer as much as I have enjoyed it.

With the start of school often there are questions regarding schedule changes. The master schedule with all offerings is located on the right side of this website under "Useful Websites and Forms". Along with that, the schedule change form is also under "Useful Websites and Forms". You will need both of those items when making a schedule change.

Per the student handbook, all schedule changes must be made within 5 days of the semester beginning.

I will be back in my office Aug. 29, 31, and Sept 1st. I encourage you to call if you plan to come to see me as my calendar tends to be full during workshop week with meetings, workshops, and other appointments.

Just a few things to remember with the end of the school year:

* If you are a senior who has taken college credit courses, please make sure you have filled out the transcript release forms (see me or your college credit teacher). If you don't fill these out then your college credits will not be transferred to the college you are attending next fall.

* Tomorrow the juniors will be going to their job shadow sites. I have met with all juniors who have study hall, TA or Office Aide to discuss their career choice, what their plans are after they graduate, and answer any questions they may have about their career choice. I like the juniors to go into the summer with a plan of action. If you are junior or a parent of a junior and didn't meet with me but would like to meet with me before the end of the school year, please see me or let Mr. Nietfeld (Careers teacher) and let one of us know that you would like to meet with me to discuss your plans after graduation.

- Typical Career Name: Chemical Equipment Operators, Chemical Plant Operators, Engineering Technicians, Science Technicians, Water Treatment Plant Operators

- What do I do with this? Water and wastewater treatment technology programs prepare people to help engineers and others develop water systems. Students learn about water storage and treatment systems. They also learn to inspect, test samples, and write reports.

- Things to know: The technology in this field continues to change constantly, so you should take classes throughout your career to keep your skills up to date, even if your locality does not require it. The good news is that often your employer will pay for these classes.

You may need to pass a civil service exam to be employed by a municipality.

- Approximate starting wage: $21.54 per hour with a high growth (meaning a good job outlook)! I often tell students interested in some type of Natural Resources career path to look at this as this career path has a higher growth of job opportunities.

Trendy three-year degrees gain momentum in Minnesota

Colleges weigh whether to make it easier for motivated students to finish early, cut costs.

Minnesota universities could soon cut the price of a four-year degree in a fresh way: by lopping a year off.

National debate about the value of a three-year bachelor's degree has reached the state's two public higher education systems. Minnesota State Colleges and Universities is studying the idea. Two of its universities have proposed condensed programs in certain majors. The University of Minnesota, Morris, is quietly debating doing the same.

The idea is gaining traction as families demand relief from ever-increasing tuition.

Some experts say three-year degrees could save students a fourth of the cost of college. Critics point out that they could also miss out on a quarter of the education.

"The three-year degree could become the higher-education equivalent of the fuel-efficient car," Newsweek proclaimed. "The three-year degree is no silver bullet," the Association of American Colleges and Universities replied.

Colleges differ in how they do it. Some rely on students earning college credit while in high school, others on students packing credits in, often during summers. The most radical proposals trim the number of credits required to graduate.

"The more dramatic the innovations, the more that they bump against other things," said Scott Olson, MnSCU's interim vice chancellor for academic and student affairs. Those things include faculty contracts, outside oversight and student interest, he said -- "external forces that might limit the ability to make dramatic changes."

Even without formal three-year paths, more students are compressing their college careers.

About 2.9 percent of students who started at the University of Minnesota in 2002 graduated after three years. Five years later, 4.8 percent of students did. But the numbers are still small. At MnSCU's seven universities, for example, just 135 students who started in 2006 earned a bachelor's degree three years later. That's less than 2 percent.

Natalie Baumgartner took four years to earn her degree -- but paid for two.

She completed her associate's degree through North Hennepin Community College while still in high school, then enrolled at Metro State University in St. Paul.

A MnSCU report shows that students who graduate in three years are much more likely to have entered school with college credits. About 23 percent of them came in with 45 or more credits.

"College is expensive," Baumgartner said, but post-secondary enrollment options, or PSEO, was free. "My mom doesn't have a ton of money, but I knew she wanted to help me pay for college. I just figured that if I could make it easier on her, I would."

Baumgartner graduated from Metro State this month with a B.A. in social science at the age of 20. Next fall, she'll start the University of Minnesota's master's program in social work -- without a dollar of debt.

Some experts worry that three-year programs push colleges to focus on a small pool of hypermotivated students like Baumgartner. Meanwhile, data show, most students struggle to graduate in even four years.

This week, MnSCU's Board of Trustees discussed the pluses and minuses.

Three-year programs could attract motivated students, improve graduation rates and help students avoid future tuition increases. But they could also force students to forgo summer internships, be seen as less rigorous and divert shrinking resources to a small number of students.

Getting students to graduate quickly requires extra advising and early class registration, so "certainly, three-year degree programs have the potential to impact the majority of students in a negative way," a committee that has studied the issue told the board Wednesday.

"It's an advantage to those who take advantage of it," said Leslie Mercer, an associate vice chancellor. "But if you are strapped for resources, and you divert resources for that, one of the consequences could be that students in that middle group ... maybe don't get the courses when they need them. "So it's a bit of a balancing act."

How it might work

So far, no college has shrunk the number of credits needed for a bachelor's degree by a fourth.

Under plans for three-year business and criminal justice programs at Bemidji State University, students would take just as many courses. But they'd take them more quickly. Students on the business track, for example, would have a normal load in fall and spring semesters, then attend summer school in person or online.

Business Prof. Thomas Fauchald said that many of his online students already take courses during the summer.

It's possible for students to graduate early without a formal three-year plan. But creating a program "would require commitment from both sides," he said. "Here are all the things you need to do. We're going to commit to you that you're going to have these courses when you need them."

Designing such a program "wasn't a huge stretch for us," Fauchald said, in part because Bemidji has experience with online programs. "When you come from a place that's a little more alternative thinking, the three-year option wasn't very radical."

Sophomores from the start

More students at the University of Minnesota, Morris, graduate in three years than those at the U's other campuses. That's one reason Morris is considering a three-year option. Such conversations are "very preliminary," spokeswoman Christine Mahoney said.

The campus would not reduce the number of credits required, she said. Instead, it might build on the fact that 15 percent of Morris' last two incoming freshman classes had 30 or more college credits.

"I can think of a half-dozen of my good friends who were sophomores the minute they stepped on campus," said Matt Privratsky, a student leader and political science major who just graduated from Morris (in four years).

He thinks those students would be attracted to a three-year option, especially with parents "more and more saying, what's the dollar value?" But like others, Privatsky worries about how it will affect students' relationships with faculty -- "Morris' biggest value."

"If someone's only there for three years instead of four, you're taking 25 percent of the interaction away," he said. "But I think many of our students are capable of getting out of three years what some students get in four."

- What do I do with this? Programs in agronomy and crop science teach people the science of raising crops. Students learn how plants and soils interact. They also learn about plant growth and behavior. In addition, they learn how to prepare and maintain soils to cultivate healthy plants.

- Things to know: It helps to grow up living on a farm or working with crops and plant life. Internships or supervised work experience may lead to employment or better job prospects and recommendations.

Due to some program's locations, you can focus on a particular crop or plant. For instance, programs located in Iowa may concentrate on corn production. This is because corn is the predominate crop grown there.

For information about farm occupations, opportunities, and 4-H activities, contact your local county extension service office.

Many states require you to be licensed before you can practice. Even when licensing is not required, a potential employer or client wants assurance of your professional competence and educational background. Employment and Income

§ Students who dropped out of high school were three times more likely than college graduates to be unemployed in 2004 (Silent Epidemic, 2007).

§ According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the unemployment rate for high school dropouts is more than 30 percent higher than that of graduates. When employed, those without a diploma earn close to 30 percent less (Orfield, Losen, Wald, & Swanson, 2004).

§ The U.S. Census estimates that high school dropouts will earn $270,000 less than high school graduates over their working lives. Census data also show that the earnings gap between high school graduates and dropouts has grown over the last two decades – in 1975, high school graduates earned 90% as much as high school graduates; in 1999, high school dropouts earned 75% as much (Orfield, Losen, Wald, & Swanson, 2004).

§ Dropouts earn $9,200 less per year than high school graduates and more than $1 million less over a lifetime than college graduates (Silent Epidemic, 2007; National Center for Dropout Prevention, 2007).

§ The number of jobs offering livable wages for individuals without high school diplomas grows less each year, as demonstrated by the rapid shrinkage of the industrial work force, which lost 2.3 million jobs since 1991 (Orfield, Losen, Wald, & Swanson, 2004).

Costs to Society

§ Dropouts are four times less likely to volunteer than college graduates, less likely to vote or participate in community projects, and represent only 3 percent of actively engaged citizens in the U.S. today (Silent Epidemic, 2007).

§ The financial benefits of dropout prevention are 2.5 times greater than the costs of implementing programs (Levin, Belfield, Muennig, & Rouse 2007).

§ The government would gain $45 billion in extra tax revenues and reduced costs in public health, crime, and welfare payments if the number of high school dropouts among 20-year olds in the U.S. today (more than 700,000 individuals) were cut by half (Silent Epidemic, 2007).

Juniors: Take the ACT Test!

This Saturday is the first ACT test that is offered at Melrose HS for the 2010-2011 school year. The ACT is not affiliated with Melrose HS, but is just offered here through the ACT Corporation.

This test, on Saturday, is typically the first time a junior in HS will take the ACT. It is offered again on June 11, 2011 at Melrose HS. I recommend that juniors planning to attend a 4 year college take the ACT either this Saturday or June 11th. This gives the the juniors an opportunity to receive one set of scores before their senior year starts to enable them to apply to college right away in the fall. If they are not happy with their score, or would just like to see if they can do better, they can re-take the test again on September 10 or October 22, 2011. Neither of these test dates are offered at Melrose HS, however. The dates of the 2011-2012 school year test can be found here.

If you are a junior and would like to still take the test this Saturday, click here for an option to test.

It is important to prepare for the ACT test, but I am just as quick to point out that it is very difficult to "study" for the ACT as it tests what you already know. Now of course you can take test prep courses which are designed to review the information that will likely be on the test and to give you helpful "tips" for testing. The ACT website does have some useful information for preparing for the ACT.

Senior Scholarships

I hope I can assume that the seniors have been picking up the senior scholarships available from local businesses in the main office?! There have been numerous announcements regarding the scholarships overhead and in the announcements (like below). Every year local businesses give JUST MELROSE SENIORS around $25,000 in scholarship monies. If you haven't done so, please check as new ones have been added weekly.

Many of these scholarship applications are due to Carol in the office by April 1, which is next week Friday. The applications typically ask for letters of recommendation and transcripts, so make sure that you have asked for that information in plenty of time to get your applications completed and in on time!

College Major of the Week: Interior Design

This week: Interior Design, offered at Alexandria Technical College
- Length of the program: 2 years (Associate's Degree)
- Typical Career Name: Interior Designer, Designer's Assistant, Kitchen and Bath Designer, Residential Designer, Sales Associate or Manufacturer's Representative
- What do I do with this? Interior design programs prepare people to plan and design indoor spaces. Students learn drafting and graphic methods to express their designs. They learn to select furniture and furnishings to fit their space designs. They also learn about building codes and laws.
- Things to know: Getting a diploma or an associate degree in interior design typically prepares you to be only a design assistant and not a professional interior designer. However, it also provides a useful introduction to this program of study. If you decide afterwards that this program is truly right for you, you can apply to get a baccalaureate or graduate degree.

Many states require you to be licensed before you can practice. Even when licensing is not required, a potential employer or client wants assurance of your professional competence and educational background. Passing the certification exam given by the National Council for Interior Design shows these things about you; it also qualifies you for licensure where necessary.

- Approximate starting wage: $25.28 per hour with a high growth (meaning a good job outlook)!

Information about College Courses at Melrose HS

Well I fell off of the blogging bandwagon for a while there. It's been very busy in the guidance department with pre-registration in January and then Accuplacer testing the past 3 weeks.

What is Accuplacer testing? The Accuplacer test is a test that is required by M State Fergus Falls and Fond du Lac Community College in order to take college credit courses. So essentially in order to take the college credit courses for credit that we offer at Melrose HS you must take and pass the Accuplacer test (as outlined by the colleges).

In order to be able to take the Accuplacer test you must be a junior or senior (in the 2011-2012 academic year), as a junior you must have a 3.2 CUM GPA and as a senior you must have a 2.8 CUM GPA. This GPA must be attained by the end of fall semester of the 2010-2011 school year. In addition, check the registration manual (link is off to the right of this blog) as some courses have additional criteria (higher GPA, teacher recommendation, etc.)

It's not an easy test. It's very important that students are studying for this test. I list a web site under Useful Websites (listed off to the right of this blog). In addition students can study just by Googling "Accuplacer Practice Tests".

Here is a breakdown of the tests required by the college for the following courses:

Fond du Lac CC - for all of their classes students must pass the reading and sentence skills test
Spanish III
Spanish IV
German III
German IV

M State Fergus Falls
Composition and Literature (teacher recommendation and pass the reading test)
Psychology (pass the reading test)
College Biology (pass the reading test)
College Chemistry (pass the reading and math tests)
College Physics (pass the reading and math tests)
College Algebra (teacher recommendation and pass the math test)
College Statistics (teacher recommendation and pass the math test)
College Trigonometry (complete College Alg and Stats and pass the math test)
College Calculus (complete Trigonometry and pass the math test)

Things to keep in mind: if you do not get into a course that you requested and passed all the required tests, make sure you have talked to the teacher of that course as many of them (again, check the registration manual) have additional criteria besides meeting the minimum criteria.
If you do not pass the test and will be a junior, you will have the opportunity to re-test again as an incoming senior (next school year). As a reminder, you can test once and then re-test once. This is a rule set up by the colleges, not Melrose HS. I wish I could let everyone pass and take the classes for credit, but there are criteria that the colleges are very strict about.

- Length of the program: 4 years (bachelor's degree) or 2 years at Ridgewater
- Typical Career Name: Cartographers and Photogrammetrists, Drafters, Geographers, Geospatial INformation Scientisits and Technologists, Photographers, Precision Agriculture Technicians, Remote Sensing Scientists and Technologists, Social Science Research Assistants, Surveying and Mapping Technicians, Surveyors
- What do I do with this? Cartography programs teach people to make maps. Students learn to use math and computers to aid them in reading and designing maps. They also learn to interpret geographic information from photos.
- Things to know: Students use computers for research, map design, word processing, and running statistical packages.

You can combine your cartography studies with a major in history, archeology, biology, or many other fields.

There are few graduate programs in cartography alone. However, you can study cartography further by attending a graduate program in geography.

The Melrose Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) invites Melrose Area students to apply for membership. The National Honor Society (NHS) is a national organization established to recognize outstanding high school students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. The Melrose chapter of the NHS not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
Requirements for Induction into NHS are: Member of the sophomore, junior, or senior class, a GPA of at least 3.5, participation in various leadership activities, and a student must show exemplary character.

College Major of the Week: Nuclear Medicine

This week: Nuclear Medicine at SCSU in St Cloud, MN
- Length of the program: 4 years (bachelor's degree)
- Typical Career Name: Nuclear Medical Technologist, Radiologic Technologist, Radiation Therapist
- What do I do with this? Nuclear medical technology programs teach people how to use radioactive atoms to diagnose and treat health problems. Students learn health physics. They learn how to operate equipment and maintain radiation safety.
- Things to know: Working with radioactive atoms means exposure to radiation. Part of this program involves learning the proper safety procedures to protect yourself. Following these procedures gives you an excellent chance of avoiding danger. And as an extra precaution, you wear a badge that keeps track of how much radiation you've been exposed to.

For your clinical education assignments, you're responsible for your own transportation as well as your uniform, shoes, and name badge.

Graduating from a nuclear medical technology program qualifies you to sit for the certification exams given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board.

Currently, 21 states in the country require you to be licensed to practice nuclear medical technology.

St. Scholastica is offering a camp that will be hosted in Wadena, MN and 100% of registration fees will go directly to the WDC Softball program. Whew, I am back with the major of the week. It's been a chaotic few weeks, so I apologize for the lag in resuming this part of the blog!

This week: Video Gaming and Application Development at MN School of Business in Richfield, MN or Century College in White Bear Lake, MN.
- Length of the program: 2 years or more (depending on your degree)
- Typical Career Name: Video Gaming Designers, Video Gaming Programmers, Video Gaming Engineers
- What do I do with this? Video Gaming programs prepare people to design gaming systems. Students learn about gaming hardware, software, and networking. They learn to create easy-to-use system designs.
- Things to know: It is common for employers to require you to have a bachelor's degree to gain entry-level work in the field. Video Gaming degrees are sometimes offered as part of an overall computer science program. In many case, they are combined with engineering into a single program. In some programs, business courses are also offered. This is because much of your work will be project-based. Therefore, management and organization courses are useful. Perhaps one of the best things about Video Gaming programs is that you stay up-to-date on the latest technologies. This usually means that you take courses in state-of-the-art classrooms with access to several types of computers and software.
- Approximate starting wage: $26 per hour. This career has a high demand rating if you are willing to work with computers, it is considered an average demand if you are only wanting to work with video gaming.

There will be a call made through the school reach phone system on Thursday with the following information.

There will be a meeting in the HS Cafeteria on Jan. 6th at 6 pm for 8th and 9th grade students and parents and at 7 pm for 10th and 11th grade parents. This meeting is being held to explain how the new online registration process will work. Students will be able to input their class requests for the 2011-2012 school year at their home computer or any computer where they can receive internet access. If you cannot attend your designated time slot, you may come to the other time slot (6 or 7pm). If you have two or more children that will be in high school next year, you only need to attend one of the informational sessions. If you cannot attend, your student will receive the information at school on Jan. 7th.

If you haven't done so already, please be sure to check out the scholarships that are located on the right side of this post. I just put a CentraCare scholarship on there this morning.

We started using a new school software, Genesis, starting with the 2009-2010 school year. Last week I went with our computer support specialist (who oversees the Genesis program) to a registration conference. Every year in January I have the 8-11th grade students input their requests for the next school year. This year will be no different, however the students will be able to input these requests at home with the help of their parents. The program that students will use for this is called StudentVue, which is similar to ParentVue that parents can use to check on their student's grades. College Major of the Week: Graphic Design

This week: Recreation Therapy at Alexandria Technical College.
- Length of the program: 2 years
- Typical Career Name: Graphic Designer, Animators and Multi-media Artists, Art Directors,
Industrial Designers, Web Developers
- What do I do with this? Graphic design programs prepare people to convey ideas and feelings using images and words. Students learn to design and lay out images and text using computers. They study advertising and commercial art. They also learn prepress and printing techniques.
- Things to know: An internship is an important way for you get professional references, add depth to your design portfolio, and get experience working with design teams. In an internship, you may find you are working with people who might hire you when you graduate or who will provide references and professional contacts to you. Graphic designers should begin to develop their professional portfolios during college. You can include examples of work you've done independently or as part of a team. Projects you complete during an internship become an important part of the portfolio. Students of graphic design may need to buy their own computers and graphic arts software. Often, graphic design programs encourage you to use Apple computers. These have become standard in the field. About one-third of all graphic designers are self-employed. In many cases, graphic designers work "in-house" for large companies and nonprofit groups. They help design newsletters, web pages, and new product logos, to name a few.
- Approximate starting wage: $21 per hour. This career path has an "average" employment outlook, which essentially means about 70% of those graduating get a job in their exact field right out of college.

PLAN Test

Yesterday all 10th graders at Melrose took the PLAN test. This is a very useful tool for those students considering going onto a 4 year college as this is what I refer to as the "Pre ACT". In 8th grade they all took the EXPLORE test, 10th grade is the PLAN test and then as 11th graders, if they choose to on their own, they will take the ACT. The ACT is a determining factor to getting into a 4 year college. You can find more information about the EXPLORE, PLAN, ACT by clicking on their highlighted name.

One of the main reasons why I really like this test is that it has an interest inventory as part of the test. After we receive the results, the test takes the results of the interest inventory and compares that with the answers to the subject area test and lets the student know not only what they will enjoy as a career, but also what they will be good at doing.

When the results come in, I will meet with the entire class to go over the results and explain their scores and the interest inventory.

College Major of the Week: Recreation Therapy

- Length of the program: 4 years (can go on and get a master's for additional career opportunities)
- Typical Career Name: Recreational Therapist, Rehab Counselor
- What do I do with this? Recreation therapy programs prepare people to use leisure activities to promote health and healing in patients. Students learn counseling and leisure program planning. They also learn about human growth and ways to work with people with special needs
- Things to know: Recreation therapists are often called "therapeutic recreation specialists." Most people with a degree in recreation therapy become certified. You must graduate from an accredited program, gain a specific number of hours of direct client contact, and pass an exam. You then become a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, or CTRS. Many states require you to be certified before you can work with clients and patients.
- Approximate starting wage: $20 per hour. This career path has an "above average" employment outlook, which essentially means a majority of those graduating in this field will get a job out of college.

Graduating with Honors

Every year I have a hand full of seniors that will not graduate with honors because they are just short one credit of receiving an honors diploma. It is important that as a student and parent you keep honors courses and an honors diploma in mind when you are registering for classes. This means having a plan starting in 9th grade and staying on top of your class choices and requirements. If you are interested in knowing what is required for the honors diploma and the classes that are a part of this program, click on the registration manual link on the right side of this web page and then scroll down to page 6. If you log into ParentVue you can look at your course history so you know what you have taken thus far and compare that with the courses that are included as part of the Honors Program.

Many times students will ask me why they should "bother" with the honors diploma. The answer is simple: it looks good on scholarship and college applications! Colleges and organizations want to know that you went above and beyond just the regular requirements to graduate from high school.

College Major of the Week: Air Traffic Controller

This week: Air Traffic Controller at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, ND.
- Length of the program: 4 years
- Typical Career Name: Air Traffic Controller (Tower Option), Air Traffic Controller (Enroute Option), Certified Professional Controller (CPC), Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS)
- What do I do with this? Programs in air traffic control prepare people to direct air traffic. Students learn to use radar and radio communication to talk to pilots. They learn to read flight plans, instruments, and weather conditions. They also get hands-on experience at an FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) flight control center during training.
- Things to know: Nearly all air traffic controllers work for the government. Most work for the Federal Aviation Administration, although some work for the Department of Defense. A few work for private companies. Controllers must pass a physical exam each year, so they must be in good shape. Controllers must also pass a job performance exam at least once per year. College graduates with civilian or military experience as controllers, navigators, or pilots have the best chances of entering the air traffic controller program.
- Approximate starting wage: $62+ per hour (or about $128,000 a year!) with a 70% placement.

The National Honor Society at Melrose Area Public Schools is collecting gifts through the annual “Giving Tree” project. Students, teachers, and staff are asked to take ornaments with specific gift ideas off the tree and furnish those gifts before November 23 to the NHS. The tree will be displayed during the three lunch periods in the cafeteria and the gifts will be distributed to needy families in our community. Thanks to all who participate.

College Major of the Week: Cardiovacular Technologist

This week: Cardiovascular Technologist offered at St. Cloud Technical College (and a few others in MN)
- Length of the program: 2-3 years
- Typical Career Name: Often you are called an Ultrasound Tech (Sonography Tech) with a specialty in performing Cardiology (Heart and Vascular) Ultrasounds.
- What do I do with this? Programs in cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary technology prepare people to test and help physicians treat health problems of the heart and lungs. Students learn to operate equipment and monitor patients. They also learn to comfort patients and respond to emergencies.
- Things to know: For the clinical part of this program, you're required to buy your own uniforms and provide transportation to get yourself to and from your practicum site. You also need liability insurance. There is some radiation use in cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary technology. The risk of harm from radiation is very small. However, if you are pregnant, you are usually required to tell the program director. That way, arrangements can be made to protect your unborn child. Graduating from an accredited program qualifies you to take a registry exam in cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary technology. Registration is not required in every state, but it shows employers and patients that you are skilled and knowledgeable in this program. Students who complete an electrocardiograph program as part of a cardiovascular program qualify to take the national certification exam administered by the Cardiology Credentialing International. In some cases, EKG programs are offered separately from cardiovascular technology programs.
- Approximate starting wage: $22+ per hour with a 92% placement (which is good!)

Junior Class Meeting

A week and a half ago I met with entire junior class. During that time I talked with them about graduation requirements, applying to college, taking the ACT, the importance of keeping on track with their studying, etc. Along with that information they also received a copy of their transcript. Please ask your student to see their transcript and ask them to explain their transcript. I love our new transcripts because it shows all the subject areas and number of credits required to graduate, how many credits your student has completed, how many they have in progress this school year and how many still needed to graduate. If you have questions about this please contact me.

- Typical Career Name:MANY!!!! Careers are offered in Engineering, Installation and Repair, Production and Construction; one careers example: Power Distributors and Dipatchers
- What do I do with this? Power plant operators adjust controls to distribute power demands among the generators. They also monitor the instruments that regulate the flow of electricity from the plant.
- Things to know: This a very broad college major, but will open many doors. With such an enormous push for things to "go green" this will be a very employable career path with many "in demand" job opportunities. You must like working with your hands, have good communication skills, like working in various conditions (inside and outdoors) and have good problem solving skills.
- Approximate starting wage: $30+ per hour!

Picture retakes are Monday, November 1 from 10:00 – 11:00 in the theatre. If you did not have your picture taken you must have your picture taken for records. If the photographer is at fault they will retake them but if you just don’t like them you will have to pay a fee of $4.00. Bring your pictures with you to retakes. Also stop by the office and pick up forms.

Yearbook staff cost for sweatshirts is: $30.00 with printing on the back and $26.00 with no printing.

Any 9-12 grade girls who are interested in cheerleading for this winter please sign up in the high school office by Friday. If not enough interest it will be cancelled.

If you are a senior or a parent of a senior, I would like to invite you to set up an appointment with your son/daughter to talk about post-high school plans. This meeting could be quite helpful if your son/daughter is trying to decide where to go to college, which college to attend, what major they are interested in, jobs available after high school, and credits needed to graduate, etc.

I will be taking appointments on a first come, first served basis during conferences. Conferences are Monday, Nov. 22nd and 23rd from 5-8 p.m. and Nov. 24th from 8am-12noon. I can meet with you for one half hour increment. These are the appointments:

This person will discuss all types of financial aid for all types of schools, not just private colleges. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be available that evening as well as the opportunity for a question/answer time. Please plan to attend with your student. - Length of the program: 2 years (after your generals are completed) - 4 year degree
- Typical Career Name:Research & Development Chef, TechnoChef,Product Assurance/Development Manager, Corporate Executive Chef, Culinary R & D Chef, Senior Culinary Research Technologist, Savory Lab Manager, Product Formulation Chef
- What do I do with this? Culinology prepares people to cook and present meals in restaurants and other places that serve food. Students learn to plan menus and recipes. They study different cooking techniques. They also learn how to buy supplies and manage kitchens.
- Things to know: You are expected to purchase your own cooking tools and chef's uniform. If your program does not offer a practicum or externship, seek out an apprenticeship on your own. As mentioned above, a practicum gives you working experience and exposes you to different cooking styles. You also make professional contact with potential employers or references. A few different organizations offer certification as a culinary artist or chef. While certification is not required to be a chef, it does show potential employers your competence and knowledge of cooking. Every state has different regulations for food safety and preparation in institutions such as restaurants. Check with your local health department or state restaurant association for more information on specific requirements. You may need to get a certificate in food safety before you can start working.
- Approximate starting wage: $50,000 a year (with 100% placement after graduation)!

College Fair for Juniors and Seniors

Over 60 colleges and universities will be there for you and your parents to visit and ask questions. Thinking Outside of the Box - Unique College Majors

Every week I will feature a "unique" college major offered at a college in MN or surrounding states. I think it's important to think outside of the box of the typical majors I hear that students are interested in obtaining.

This week: Nondestructive Testing Technology offered at Ridgewater College.
- Length of the program: 2 years
- Typical Career Name: Civil Engineer or Quality Control Inspector
- What do I do with this? Think of the 35W bridge collapse back in August of 2007. Many "inspectors" of the bridge were people with this time of college major. They needed to study the debris to find out what went wrong and how to avoid this type of catastrophe again.
- Things to know: Nondestructive Testing programs may be part of larger Quality Control programs. Nondestructive Testing may sometimes be called nondestructive inspection or nondestructive evaluation. Nondestructive testing may use some equipment that is used for medical purposes, but is a separate field. You need good communications skills to succeed in this field. A writing course, and probably a public speaking course, should be part of your program even if they are not required. Consider taking some business courses. In this field you work closely with management, so it helps to be able to speak that language. In addition, the skills you learn in these courses may later help you make a career shift into management. You may want to become certified by a professional organization, as it will improve your job prospects. Plan on doing this after you get some work experience. You probably will need to get some additional specialized training before you take the certification examination. The good news is that often your employer will pay for you to get this training.
- Approximate starting wage: $25 per hour or $52,000 a year (pretty good for a two year degree and fresh out of college)!

Many students seem to be confused about how the process of signing up to visit with a college representative here at Melrose HS works. If you are a junior or a senior you may sign up in the guidance office before 8:15 a.m. on the day the college rep plans to visit. The rep comes to Melrose HS to visit, you aren't signing up to go to the college to visit. This is a great way to learn more about the campus before you make an appointment with the college to visit on-campus. The sign up sheets are located on the bulletin board right inside the guidance office.

If you want to visit the college campus you need to pick up a college visit form from Cheryl in the office a few days before you go to the campus. If you need help setting up your appointment at the college, see me and I can help you set it up.

If you are a parent of a senior, we are having our senior information meeting today during 6th hour. As mentioned in a previous post, the seniors will be receiving information on graduation, college applications, financial aid, scholarships and other miscellaneous info. Please talk with your senior about the information from the meeting today.

I will likely be blogging quite often about jobs that are either in high demand or rarely heard of (or both) as I think it is so important to "think outside the box" when it comes to picking a career field. I really enjoy reading about new opportunities in the career world and hope it helps you find a path that maybe you never thought of or is something you would like to pursue. I came across this article today on MSN Careers that talks about jobs that a lot of us have probably never even heard about.

Well I am officially back and sorting through everything in my office and on my desk. I have appreciated the many "welcome back" comments from students - it's been fun to be back and I came back during Homecoming week - how great is that?!

Once a week I will post the announcements from school here so you as parents can see what is going on at school.

Also, next week I will be meeting with the entire Senior class to discuss transcripts, college applications, applying for scholarships and financial aid as well as answer any questions they may have. Please be sure to talk with your senior about this meeting and ask him/her to see the information I pass out to them at the meeting.

Welcome Back!

Wow, where does the summer go?! I think it goes by faster and faster every year. I have been busy this summer now chasing TWO kids. I have been on leave from MAHS since my daughter's birth on September 18th, 2009 and I will return to MAHS on Monday, September 20th, 2010. I have had a BLAST at home with my two kids, Teague - 3 and Lola - 11 months, but am anxious to get back to my "other kids" at school.

I set up this website as a way to better communicate with you as parents and students. I will use this website to post upcoming events related to the 9-12 Guidance Office. Hopefully this will help us all stay on top of deadlines and also answer questions you may have.

I encourage you to check this website often (so mark it as a favorite now!). Feel free to send me an email (the email address is included on this site) or leave me a comment at the bottom of each post if you have any questions.
